The beautiful suburbia of Copenhagen is surrounded by lush forest and meadows. Far away from the touristy radar, many travellers rarely venture in this part of the city. What they don’t know is that there are six friendly giants lurking in this forest! Yup, you read that right, giants!
Despite being close to the city, Copenhageners rarely explored this off the beaten track forest. Artist Thomas Dambo had an innovative idea to get locals to discover, explore, and appreciate the verdant nature surrounding their city. He chose this forest for his new project, The Six Forgotten Giants. Dambo specializes in using reclaimed and recycled materials for his art. Obviously, his six giants are built using the same method from scrap wood collected from old, demolished buildings and felled trees.
Aimed to show the world the beauty of nature in the outskirts of Copenhagen, he thoughtfully hid his giants across the forest. The idea was to encourage people to go on a treasure hunt (complete with a ‘treasure map’!) to find these big, friendly fellas. Each giant is named after a volunteer who helped Dambo build it.
There’s also a bigger story or purpose behind each giant. Little Tilde who watches over the lake through a set of trees is actually filled with over 28 birdhouses for birds to seek shelter in winter.
Sleeping Louis is a reference to the homeless found near the spot where Louis now sleeps. But Louis is not just an art piece; he provides shelter to the homeless that is entered through his big gaping mouth.
Teddy Friendly, standing by the water stream, extends his big arm across the rivulet that serves as a bridge.
Thomas on the Mountain leisurely chills on a hillock. His long legs make for a wonderful hangout spot for kids and adults alike!
Oscar Under the Bridge loves his cozy hiding place under the bridge, obviously. But is he just hiding? Nope. He helps support the bridge with his strong arms.
Hill Top Trine as her name suggests sits atop a hill enjoying the surrounding scenic views and she wants you to enjoy them too! Her huge arms can be climbed on and from the top you can soak in the same view that Trine does!
While a car helps in getting around, discovering the giants on foot as you wander through the forest is an altogether different and exciting experience. If you’re an art buff, combine you trip with a visit to the nearby Arken Museum of Modern Art. Curious to know more about these friendly giants? Here’s a video for you.
