In the spring of 1984, the tiny Irish village of Dooagh on the island of Achill was hit with a series of Atlantic storms. After a particularly severe storm, the villagers woke up to find their beloved beach missing. The storm had sucked all of the beach’s sand into the Atlantic Ocean leaving behind a bare rocky coastline.

33-years later, in April 2017, Dooagh was hit with some freak tidal waves. Lo and behold, its missing 900ft long beach was back within a couple of days! The unusual tides washed back tons of sand, recreating the old beach.

Oddly enough, this isn’t the first time Dooagh’s beach has disappeared only to reappear again! Sean Molly, manager at Achill Tourism, told The Irish Times that a very similar missing beach incident occurred in the 1890s. But by 1930s, sand was once again deposited, and the beach was back.

According to scientists and geologists, it is fairly common for sand to be eroded and deposited on beaches in decadal cycles. However, it’s rather mysterious why it took 33-years for sand to reappear at Dooagh. Ivan Haigh, oceanographer from the University of Southampton (U.K) aptly explained this phenomenon to the Weather Channel. “Sand along the coast is in a constant state of flux, moved by storms, waves and wind. It is also influenced by the available supply of sediment from stretches of coastline many hundred kilometers away. The strength of storm and waves, change on decadal time-scales – and it is also possible that environmental conditions have altered, providing the ideal conditions for a fresh build-up of sand,” he said.

Since its seemingly miraculous and magical reappearance, this beach has been making waves with tourists who are flocking from all over Ireland and U.K. With a population of fewer than 3,000, the town’s main economy has always been tourism. This old-new beach has given the economy a pleasant boost. The locals are certainly loving it as it has become one of the best tourist places to visit in Ireland.

Though we don’t know if and when the beach will vanish again, let’s enjoy it while it’s here!
