For a long time, Juzcar was like any other Pueblo Blanco, a traditional white washed village in Andalusia, Spain. But in 2011, the village got a makeover by none other than Sony Pictures. To celebrate the release of its much-awaited movie, The Smurfs, Sony turned Juzcar into a Smurf Village by painting it blue! With the unexpected economic boost led by increased tourism, the residents were quite happy to continue being blue even though Sony had promised to repaint the village post its publicity stunt. This is what makes it one of the best tourist places in Europe.

2. Chefchaouen, Morocco

A picturesque city tucked amidst Morocco’s Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen is famous for its distinctive palette of powdered-blue painted buildings. Founded in 1451, this historic city served as a refuge for Jews during the Spanish Reconquista in the Middle Ages. Jewish refugees who escaped Europe in the 1930s painted their neighborhoods in blue, a symbol of the sky and heaven, and a reminder to lead a spiritual life. The trend caught on, and now much of the town is awash with shades of blue!

An important industrial city in Sweden, Falun was once famous for its copper mines. During the 16th century, the tailings from the copper mines here were used to develop a deep red paint known as the Falu Red. This unique red paint was effective for wood preservation and soon became the natural choice for barns, summer cottages, boat houses, and even public buildings. Even today, Falu Red is widely used not only in Falun but across Sweden, Estonia and Finland.
