Oh, how magically beautiful is the Enchanting Forest from our favorite childhood fairy tales! Hang on. This isn’t a fairy tale. This forest exists. It’s in Canada! Yep, you read that right.

Artists Doris Needham’s passion was creating hand-sculpted cement sculptures of figures from fairy tales and nursery rhymes. But there was a problem. She didn’t have any place to keep her art. So, in the 1950s, she and her husband Ernest came up with an innovative idea. They bought a forest and filled it with more than 350 handmade fairytale figurines. Voila, they created their own little Enchanted Forest. Over the years, they built little waterfalls, castles, cute little cottages, giant mushrooms, tree houses, dungeons and dragons and little hidden surprises scattered all over the forest.

Word about this wondrous forest spread, and by 1970, a million people had visited this marvelous fantasy land. Soon, the flocking crowds became unmanageable. Wanting a more peaceful retired life, Doris and Ernest sold their wonderland to Rocky and Juliet Ehlers and their three children, who love and take care of the forest. Visitors are still most welcome to explore the forest.

Where exactly is this Enchanting Forest? It is located midway between Sicamous (35km) and Revelstoke (32km) in British Columbia, Canada. The best part of this forest is that you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy it. The forest itself is wonderful with an 800-year-old cedar grove. You can take a walk through lush forest trails or paddle away in a large beaver pond. Come autumn, you can see salmon spawning. During migration season, look out for sightings of moose and caribou.

So come, live your favorite fairy tale in this forest like none other.
