While Bangkok may be Thailand’s (and the world’s) most popular shopping hub, fashionistas often overlook the artsy Thai city of Chiang Mai. In the recent years, Chiang Mai rose to fame because of its burgeoning art scene. Yet, few travelers know that the city is full of vintage treasures. What makes vintage shopping even better here is that you can grab all sorts of retro goodies for one third the price that you’d otherwise pay in other places. Here’s the lowdown on the best places to shop vintage clothing in Chiang Mai.
Love 70s
If you could visit only one store in Chiang Mai, let it be Love 70s. Set inside a warehouse-like building, this store is a treasure trove of 70s fashion as its name suggests. With fresh shipments landing weekly at the store, you’ll be tempted to visit more than once. What’s will you find here? Retro jeans, checkered shirts, 70s floral print dresses, lacey tunics, leather jackets and bags, scarves, and boots.
Timing: 12pm to 9pm
Kaber Vintage
Kaber Vintage is not a typical vintage store where you dig through piles of clothes. This little store is uber trendy and stylish with a broad range of clothing, jewelry and bags. You’ll also find some pretty funky retro knick-knacks to adorn your home with.
Timing: 2pm to 8pm
Na Mor (CMU Nightly Student Market)
Just because you’re on a budget trip doesn’t mean you can’t shop to your heart’s content. Na Mor is a massive nightly thrift market aimed to attract Chiang Mai University students. This market is overflowing with inexpensive new and vintage clothes and accessories. What draws people here is the range of different styles of clothing offered. Expect to find Thai, Western, Hipster, Goth, and Backpacker styles.
Timing: 6pm to 11pm
Fashion Therapy
Fashion Therapy’s tiny size will deceive you. This small store is filled with the trendiest vintage clothes in tip-top condition. The store’s friendly owner hand-picks each item in the store to ensure it is unique and of good quality, making shopping here quite a memorable experience.
Timing: 2pm to 9pm
Clothes Dumpster
Shopping at Clothes Dumpster requires some ‘digging’ but it’s worth it. You’ll find yourself rummaging through massive piles or ‘dumpsters’ of vintage clothes laid out in rows in a warehouse. At first sight you might question your decision to shop here, but venture ahead. In these seemingly dirty piles of clothes are hidden gems from the 70s and 80s. The best part? The most expensive piece of clothing here costs no more than 60 Baht (2 USD)!
