For every true-blue party lover, there’s only one party that’s the real deal – Rio de Janeiro’s annual Carnival. It is the world’s biggest, most extravagant, bombastic, and thrilling spectacle drawing millions of people from across Brazil and the rest of the world. Although the carnival’s roots are religious, it’s nothing like a religious gathering. With music blaring and beer flowing, anyone can join in and dance for five days straight. Everyone knows about the ostentatious parades, costumes, and dances, but we doubt you know these interesting facts about the carnival and its history.

The origins of Rio’s famed carnival can be traced back to the 18th century when it was introduced by Portuguese immigrants. Then called ‘Entrudo’, it was celebrated by energetic crowds by playfully throwing limes, water, flour and mud at each other.
